Poker Slang Glossary A-Z

July 2, 2026

Walk into any poker table - live or online - and the chatter is half strategy, half slang. If you don't know a "donk bet" from a "cooler," some of it will fly right past you. Here's a fast, plain-English glossary of the terms you'll hear most, organized loosely from A to Z.

A-F

  • All-in: betting every chip you have in one move. See what is an all-in.
  • Bad beat: losing a hand you were a big favorite to win, usually to a lucky card.
  • Bluff: betting or raising with a weak hand to make opponents fold. Full guide: what is a bluff.
  • Button: the dealer position, and the best seat at the table because it acts last after the flop.
  • Cooler: a hand where two strong holdings collide and someone was always going to lose a big pot, regardless of skill.
  • Donkey (donk): slang for a weak or reckless player.
  • Drawing dead: having no way left to win the hand, even if you complete your draw.
  • Fish: another word for a weak, inexperienced player - the opposite of a "shark."
  • Fold equity: the value you gain from the chance your opponent folds to your bet.

G-N

  • Gutshot: an inside straight draw, needing one specific rank to complete (like holding 8-9 and needing a 7 with a 5-6 board waiting on the other side).
  • Hero call: calling a big bet with a marginal hand based on a strong read that the opponent is bluffing.
  • Isolate (iso): raising specifically to narrow the field down to one opponent.
  • Kicker: the side card that breaks ties between otherwise equal hands.
  • Limp: calling the big blind before the flop instead of raising.
  • Muck: to fold and discard your hand face down without showing it.
  • Nit: an overly tight, cautious player who rarely plays a hand.
  • Nuts: the best possible hand given the community cards on the board.

O-S

  • Overbet: a bet larger than the size of the pot.
  • Rake: the fee a cardroom takes from each pot in real-money games.
  • Range: the full set of hands a player could reasonably hold in a given spot.
  • River: the fifth and final community card.
  • Rock: a very tight, predictable player.
  • Set: three of a kind made using a pocket pair plus one matching card on the board.
  • Shark: a skilled, winning player who profits from weaker opponents.
  • Short stack: a player with relatively few chips compared to the table.
  • Slow play: under-betting a strong hand on purpose to keep opponents in the pot.
  • Slow roll: deliberately delaying showing a winning hand - considered rude etiquette.

T-Z

  • Tank: taking a long time to make a decision.
  • Tell: a physical or behavioral clue that reveals information about a player's hand.
  • Tilt: playing worse than usual because of frustration or emotion.
  • Trips: three of a kind made with one hole card matching a pair on the board (as opposed to a set).
  • Under the gun (UTG): the first player to act pre-flop, seated directly left of the big blind.
  • Value bet: betting a strong hand to get called by worse, rather than to make opponents fold.
  • Whale: a recreational player who plays a lot of hands and loses a lot of chips.

Why the lingo matters

Poker slang isn't just color - a lot of it describes real strategic concepts. Knowing that "the nuts" means the best possible hand, or that a "cooler" is a hand nobody could have avoided, helps you follow table talk, forum posts, and strategy articles without constantly stopping to look things up. Building this vocabulary alongside the fundamentals in Texas Hold'em rules and poker hand rankings will speed up how quickly you pick up the game overall.

Put the words into practice
