The showdown is the moment of truth in Texas Hold’em: after the final betting round, the remaining players turn their cards face up and the best hand wins the pot. It sounds simple, but a few rules trip up beginners. Here’s how it actually works.
When a showdown happens
A showdown only occurs if two or more players are still in the hand after the river betting round. If everyone folds to a bet at any point earlier, there’s no showdown — the last player standing wins without showing anything.
Who shows their cards first?
- If there was a bet or raise on the river: the player who made the last aggressive action (the last bettor or raiser) shows first.
- If everyone checked the river: the first active player to the left of the button shows first, then play proceeds clockwise.
You can always choose to muck (fold face down) instead of showing a losing hand, but if you want any chance at the pot, you must table your cards.
How the winner is decided
Each player makes their best five-card hand using any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards. The highest-ranking hand wins. If you’re unsure which hand beats which, keep the hand rankings handy.
Split pots and ties
If two players have hands of identical rank, the pot is split evenly. When hands are close, the kicker — the highest unpaired side card — often breaks the tie. And remember: sometimes the best five-card hand is entirely on the board (like a straight everyone shares), in which case all remaining players split.
"Cards speak"
In casino and online play, the "cards speak" rule applies: the dealer reads the hands objectively, so even if a player misreads their own holding, the true best hand wins. You never lose a pot just because you announced the wrong hand — as long as your cards are tabled.
Common showdown mistakes
- Mucking a winner: once your cards touch the muck, they’re dead — even if they would have won. Always check the board before folding at showdown.
- Slow-rolling: deliberately delaying showing a winning hand is considered poor etiquette. Reveal promptly.
The takeaway
The showdown resolves the hand: last aggressor shows first, cards speak, best five wins, ties split. It’s the payoff for every decision you made from preflop onward — see the full flow in how a hand of poker works.
