The Dealer Button Explained

July 2, 2026

That little disc marked "DEALER" — the button — is one of the most important objects on a poker table. It doesn’t just mark who deals; it decides who posts the blinds, who acts first, and who has the coveted last word on every street. Here’s what it really means.

What the button is

In home games, the button shows whose turn it is to deal. In casinos and online, a professional dealer runs the game, but the button still moves around the table to mark the "nominal dealer." Whoever has the button is said to be "on the button."

What the button decides

  • The blinds: the player to the left of the button posts the small blind; the next player posts the big blind.
  • Action order preflop: the first player to the left of the big blind acts first.
  • Action order postflop: the button acts last on the flop, turn, and river — a huge advantage.

Why the button is the best seat

Acting last means you see what everyone else does before you decide. You get more information, you can control the size of the pot, and you can steal pots that no one else wants. This is the heart of why position is power — and the button is the most powerful position of all.

How the button moves

After every hand, the button passes one seat clockwise (to the left). So does the small and big blind. Over a full orbit, everyone spends exactly one hand on the button, one in each blind, and one in each other seat — keeping the game fair.

Using the button well

When you’re on the button, you can play more hands profitably because your positional edge makes marginal holdings worthwhile. It’s the ideal spot to bluff, to c-bet, and to apply pressure. Smart players loosen up on the button and tighten up in early seats.

A quick note on "dead button" rules

Occasionally, when players leave a table, the button may sit in front of an empty seat (a "dead button") to keep the rotation fair. It’s a minor rule you’ll rarely need, but it exists so no one skips their blind obligations.

The takeaway

The button is more than a disc — it’s the anchor that organizes the blinds, the action, and the balance of power on every hand. Watch it, respect it, and attack when it’s yours. See the full sequence in how a hand of poker works.
