A bluff is when you bet or raise with a weak hand to make your opponents fold a better one. It’s the most famous move in poker — but also the most misused by beginners. This guide explains what bluffing is, when it works, and how to do it well. First time playing? Start with the Texas Hold’em rules.
Why bluffing works
You don’t need the best hand to win a pot — you only need your opponent to fold. Because most hands miss the flop, a well-timed bet often takes the pot uncontested. That’s the power of the bluff.
Pure bluff vs semi-bluff
- Pure bluff: betting with a hand that has little chance to win if called (e.g., no pair, no draw). You win only if everyone folds.
- Semi-bluff: betting with a drawing hand (like a flush or straight draw). You can win by making opponents fold or by hitting your draw. Semi-bluffs are much safer and are where beginners should start.
When to bluff
- Against few opponents. Bluffing one player is realistic; bluffing four is reckless.
- On believable boards. If the board could plausibly have made your hand, your bet is more convincing.
- In position. Acting last lets you see weakness (a check) before you bluff.
- Against cautious players. Tight players fold more — they’re the best bluff targets.
When NOT to bluff
- Against "calling stations" who never fold — value bet them instead.
- Into multiple opponents.
- When the story your bets tell doesn’t make sense.
Tell a believable story
A good bluff represents a specific hand. If your bets across the flop, turn, and river all make sense for a big hand, opponents are far more likely to fold. If they’re inconsistent, sharp players will call.
Beginner bluffing mistakes
- Bluffing too often (predictable).
- Bluffing too many players at once.
- Tiny bluff bets that give opponents a cheap call.
- Bluffing without thinking about pot odds — see our pot odds guide.
